Eleven Roses- ZZ Ward’s new mixtape- opens up with her Amy Winehouse/Adele inspired vocals over the beautiful beat of Tyler, The Creator’s Yonkers. The opening line “I can’t keep tape on my mouth” immediately lets you know that things are about to be said. The mixtape also includes a diverse variety of songs like OVERdue and Cinnamon Sticks (which has a definite Black Keys feel to it). ZZ Ward personally calls her grungy blues style “dirty shine” and compares it to “backyard sauce that’s so pure but so hard to swallow.” Growing up off of Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters and then later becoming obsessed with hip hop, she has created her seemingly personal genre of sweet and sultry. You can definitely hear the inspiration of blues and hip hop combined in her music.
Here is her mixtape Eleven Roses.
